Tightening the Grip: German Border Patrol Ramping Up Enforcement in Lower Saxony

Strengthening Border Patrol: Federal Police in Lower Saxony Step Up Surveillance at Borders - Enhanced border checkpoints by regional law enforcement in Lower Saxony

In the wake of the federal government's decision to ramp up border security, the Federal Police in Lower Saxony has bolstered its army, as confirmed by a spokesperson to the German Press Agency. "We've beefed up our forces at Germany's border with the Netherlands," the spokesperson explained, citing instructions from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This action isn't limited to Lower Saxony, as similar measures have been implemented in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.

Alexander Dobrindt, the new Federal Minister of the Interior, recently announced a tougher immigration policy, including stricter border checks. This new approach aims to return asylum seekers at the border if they have previously submitted applications in other European Union countries. However, exceptions will be made for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, and other at-risk individuals.

The German-Netherlands border spans approximately 180 kilometers in Lower Saxony. Since September 16, 2024, the Federal Police have intensified their efforts, with patrols at major motorways, federal roads, and now smaller crossings as well. The spokesperson noted, "We're not the epicenter of refugee routes, but we're dealing with individuals who have already been registered and are trying again." In the last twelve months, the number of detected individuals has risen, with the increased patrols leading to the discovery of more people. The Federal Reserve Police currently offers support. Exact numbers concerning deployed forces were omitted by the spokesperson. The Federal Police maintains a mobile control and monitoring unit in Lower Saxony, Hamburg, and Bremen for such purposes.

In recent times, critics have voiced concerns about the potential violation of international refugee protection obligations and interruption of cross-border trade resulting from stricter border policies. These criticisms echo those of business associations, which fear the economic impacts of the new policy. While Lower Saxony isn't specifically referenced in discussions about increased border controls, indirect effects on regional trade and movement could still materialize.
