Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender and England stalwart, has announced his retirement from international football. The 34-year-old, who has earned 81 caps for the Three Lions, will step back from representing his country to focus on his club career and let younger players come through the ranks.

Ferdinand made his England debut against Cameroon at Wembley in 1997, making him the youngest ever defender to play for England at the time. Over the subsequent 14 years, he went on to play in three World Cups: France '98, Korea/Japan '02, and Germany '06.

One of his most memorable moments came in the 2002 World Cup, where he scored his first international goal against Denmark. He added to his tally with a goal during a Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia in 2007 and another in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in 2008.

In 2008, under manager Fabio Capello, Ferdinand was made captain for one game and later appointed vice-captain. In February 2010, he became England captain, a role he was unable to fulfil at the 2010 World Cup due to a knee injury.

Rio Ferdinand's contributions to England's international football have been significant. He is England's second most capped black player and was a regular starter under Sven-Göran Eriksson, demonstrating his importance to the national side for over a decade.

England manager Roy Hodgson has expressed gratitude towards Ferdinand for his service to England and paid tribute to his achievements. Hodgson, along with former managers and England fans, are expected to join in thanking Ferdinand for his dedication and commitment to the team.

Ferdinand, who has spent six Premier League titles with Manchester United, is proud to have represented England. He is grateful for the privilege to have represented England at every level from U17s upwards and is looking forward to focusing on his club career.

As he steps away from international football, Ferdinand leaves behind a legacy of leadership, longevity, and significant contributions to England's football history. His retirement marks the end of an era for English football, but his impact will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.

Rio Ferdinand, in his club career, will continue to focus on sports, particularly football, having spent a significant part of his career at Manchester United. The retirement of Ferdinand from international football has left a void on the football field, but his contributions to England's football history, including scoring important goals in various tournaments, will continue to be remembered.
