Newcastle United have bolstered their squad for the upcoming season with the signing of German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan. The transfer, reported to be worth around £34.6 million ($46.69 million), marks the third addition to the Magpies' roster this summer.
The exact financial details of the deal have not been officially disclosed, but it is understood that the fee consists of an initial £30 million, with an additional £4.3 million in add-ons. This brings the total package to approximately £34.3 million, according to various reports.
AC Milan, who finished eighth in the Serie A last season, initially rejected an offer of around €30 million (~£26.2 million), before agreeing to the higher fee.
Thiaw, who made 31 appearances for AC Milan last season, was a key part of their defensive line-up. However, he featured less frequently towards the end of their Serie A campaign.
The 24-year-old defender has also represented Germany three times in 2023, and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at the signing.
Unlike the earlier signings of Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale, Thiaw's arrival at Newcastle United is on loan from Southampton.
With the transfer window still open, Thiaw's position in the Newcastle United team remains to be seen. The Magpies will begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday.
