In a strategic move, England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has announced that all-rounder Jamie Overton will make his return to the One-Day International (ODI) squad for the third match against South Africa, scheduled for this Sunday in Southampton.

Overton, who has taken an indefinite break from red-ball cricket to focus on white-ball formats, will replace fast bowler Saqib Mahmood in the squad. The 31-year-old has previously represented England in six ODIs, with his last outing being against the West Indies.

Trescothick believes that Overton's inclusion is crucial, emphasising the need to maximise performances as England heads into a busy winter season. He stated, "Jamie is a valuable addition to the squad. We need our players to be 'firing' if we are to perform well, and Jamie is certainly one of those."

Ben Duckett, another key player, will also feature in the match, despite the series already being decided in South Africa's favour. Trescothick believes Duckett is vital to England's ODI fortunes, stating, "Ben is a player we need to be performing well for us to compete. He will have a chance to recuperate following the match on Sunday."

However, Duckett will not be available for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa next week due to fatigue.

England currently sits eighth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings, occupying the last automatic qualifying position for the 2027 tournament. Trescothick acknowledges the team's recent struggles in ODIs and the importance of maintaining their place in the ncaa football rankings, especially with the next 50-over World Cup on the horizon.

The England XI for the third ODI includes Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

Overton's inclusion marks the only change in the squad, indicating consistent support for all-rounders Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, who have previously bowled 10 overs collectively in the series, conceding 112 runs.

Trescothick also emphasised the need to climb the ncaa football rankings and avoid complacency, with a long-term goal of being at the top of the rankings and competing in the biggest competitions. He stated, "We need to maintain our position and continue to push for improvement. Our ultimate goal is to be the best and compete in the biggest tournaments."

The third ODI against South Africa promises to be an exciting contest, with both teams looking to end the series on a high note.
