England's top first-class batting prospect, James Rew, hasn't made his Test cricket debut yet. Why is that the case?
Rew's Remarkable Unbeaten Century Makes Waves 🏏
In a stunning turn of events this week, James Rew, the young gun, smashed a century at 21 years old, breaking Denis Compton's record for the youngest Englishman to score ten first-class hundreds since 1939.
With a remarkable ability to master challenging situations, Rew led his team to a jaw-dropping chase against Essex’s formidable attack. His impressive performance against an attacking quartet of Sam Cook, Jamie Porter, Simon Harmer, and Kasun Rajitha speaks volumes about his grit and talent.
As of now, Rew's stats are nothing short of exhilarating. With 45 first-class appearances under his belt, he has racked up over 2,600 runs, maintaining an impressive average of 43.35. In Division One cricket, Rew consistently outperforms his contemporaries, averaging 46.03. This is more than Jordan Cox (45.34), Jamie Smith (41.03), Zak Crawley (33.97), Ben Duckett (32.88), Harry Brook (35.73), all of whom are currently part of the England Test squad.
Given England's penchant for handpicking young talents from county cricket when circumstances align, Rew's journey seems tailor-made for a Bazball prodigy. Remarkably, Rew's debut in the County Select XI came as a 17-year-old, where he famously stumped Cheteshwar Pujara, an India stalwart, in his very first morning of first-class cricket.
Since then, Rew's ascent into the cricketing world has been breathtaking. He topped the scores in the Under-19 World Cup final in 2022, scoring 95 runs as England narrowly lost to India. Rewitz soon broke into the Somerset County Championship, showcasing his potential and quickly becoming one of the most reliable run-scorers in the country. By 2023, he had amassed five Championship hundreds while barely reaching his twenties.
But here's where the story takes a twist. Despite astounding numbers, Rew has yet to secure a Test call-up. So, why is the English youngster with the most formidable first-class record in the country still waiting in the wings?
Several factors could be at play. First and foremost, Rew predominantly bats at six for Somerset; the England Test team isn't exactly in need of another wicketkeeper or lower-middle order batsman. With Ben Stokes solidifying the sixth spot, Rew would need to displace the likes of Ollie Pope and Jordan Cox who are, respectively, making their mark as a dependable wicketkeeper and batting back-up.
It's worth noting that England usually prefers players who bat higher up the order, as they face fresher bowlers and new balls. Moreover, it's unusual for England to select a specialist batsman who hasn't batted in the top five for their county side before.
There have been exceptions to this rule, however. Ollie Pope, for instance, was selected as a No. 4 during the 2018 summer despite primarily batting at six in county cricket. Bethell, another example from this era, was picked without a first-class hundred under his belt. While Rew has tantalized with his potential in short-form cricket, his recorded aptitude against high-speed bowlers remains a question mark.
So, while Rew's chances of stepping onto the international stage might be just around the corner, there are valid reasons for his delayed debut. His excellent performances could well catapult him to greater heights, especially in T20 leagues against international-class bowlers. All we can do for now is to keep an excited eye on this exceptional young talent!
