In a thrilling encounter at Malahide, England emerged victorious against Ireland in a rain-affected T20 match on September 21, 2025.

The English team, fielding a much-changed side, got off to a flying start thanks to an unbeaten 141 runs from opening batsman Phil Salt, who set a new record for England's highest individual T20 score. Salt's impressive innings included 10 fours and 4 sixes in just 46 balls. He and Jos Buttler enjoyed a blistering first-wicket partnership, scoring 74 runs inside five overs.

However, Buttler was the first to go, scoring 28 runs. Harry Bethell, at the young age of 21, took over the captaincy and scored 24 runs before holing out tamely to extra cover. Despite these setbacks, England managed to post a total of 197-6 in 17.4 overs.

Ireland, led by an impressive batting performance, posted a respectable total of 196-3, with Harry Tector scoring 61 not out and Lorcan Tucker scoring 55. Ireland's captain Paul Stirling was satisfied with the team's performance, stating, "We couldn't have asked for much more from our batters. To score 196 in the end was great."

Graham Hume and Mark Humphreys both contributed to Ireland's bowling efforts, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs and 2 wickets for 44 runs respectively. Notably, Hume was the one to dismiss Salt in the 16th over.

The series continues with the next match at Malahide on Friday, and the final match of the series will take place two days later. England's young captain, Jacob Bethell, commented on the win, "It feels pretty special, winning the first one is always nice."

It's worth mentioning that Bethell broke the record as England's youngest male captain in an international match, surpassing Monty Bowden who was 23 years and 144 days old when he captained England in an international Test against South Africa in 1889.
