England Dominate Wales in Euro 2025 Match, Leaving Critics Questioning Defensive Performance

In a one-sided Euro 2025 match, England raced to a commanding 4-0 lead against Wales before half-time. The victory, while expected, has sparked debate about Wales' defensive performance, with former Wales captain Kath Morgan expressing concerns.

Two of the goals were scored by Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp, marking their first goals in the tournament. Ella Toone, who had already scored against the Netherlands, added another to her tally. Fran Stanway also found the back of the net, converting a controversial penalty awarded due to a foul from Carrie Jones in the area, originally a free kick that was upgraded by VAR.

Morgan, in her analysis, criticised Wales' defensive organisation and response to England's attacking strategy. She pointed out specific issues such as organisational lapses, poor communication among defenders, and an inability to adapt tactically to England's game plan. These factors, according to Morgan, contributed significantly to Wales conceding goals and ultimately losing control in key moments of the match.

England, on the other hand, displayed a resilient defence, with players like Lucy Bronze making the most defensive actions despite injuries. Their ability to frustrate strong teams such as Spain and Italy suggests Wales' defensive issues were pronounced in contrast.

Morgan also noted that England have been in second gear at best, with their players outrunning Wales' in many instances. This observation, while acknowledging England's dominance, underscores the significant gap between the two teams' performances.

As England look to book a quarter-final spot, the criticism levelled at Wales' defence serves as a reminder of the areas they need to improve ahead of their next matches.
