England delivers decisive five-wicket haul in the County Championship title-deciding match
In a thrilling start to the penultimate round of the County Championship, Surrey began by bowling first against Nottinghamshire. The home team finished Day One of the match one wicket down, thanks to a solid performance by their bowlers.
Gus Atkinson and Matthew Fisher, two of Surrey's test pedigree seamers, were instrumental in Nottinghamshire's struggling performance. Atkinson ended the day with impressive figures of 4-41, while Fisher took charge of the bowling after Atkinson and finished the Nottinghamshire innings with figures of 5-61.
Haseeb Hameed was one of the wickets taken by Atkinson, while Fisher dismissed several key players, including England teammate Josh Tongue, South Africa international Kyle Verreynne, and Dillon Pennington, the final wicket of the innings.
Nottinghamshire's final eight wickets fell for 142 runs, a testament to Surrey's strong bowling performance. Dom Sibley was the only wicket lost by Surrey on Day One, scoring 14 runs.
Matthew Fisher, who moved from Yorkshire to Surrey at the end of the previous year, has been a valuable addition to the Surrey team. He played for Surrey in the 2025 County Championship season and has taken 23 wickets at an average of 37.39 for the team this season.
Luke Fisher, another former Yorkshire player, also joined Surrey last year. He helped Yorkshire secure promotion to Division One in 2024 and played one Test match against the West Indies in 2022, picking up one wicket in the match.
