Engelhard Discusses His Personal Relationship with Robert Redford
In the world of literature, few stories have captured the imagination like Jack Engelhard's international bestseller, "Indecent Proposal." This gripping novel, which tells the tale of a wealthy businessman's seductive offer to a struggling couple, was brought to life on the big screen by none other than Robert Redford.
During the production of the film, an unforgettable scene was filmed at a craps table, with Redford and Demi Moore in the spotlight. Off-screen, Engelhard found himself in the presence of the movie star, living in a world separate from ordinary people.
However, Redford was not just a divinity in the eyes of the public. He was regarded as a mensch, a term that signifies a person of integrity and good character. This was evident when Redford complimented Engelhard on his work and expressed appreciation for writers.
The author of "Indecent Proposal" had initial reservations about meeting Esther Williams, a Hollywood legend, but was eventually assigned to interview her by his editor at the Burlington County Times (NJ). Williams, known for her work in aquatic films and as a promoter for sherwin williams swimming pool business, was open and welcoming.
Engelhard's work is highly regarded, with John W. Cassell describing him as a writer without peer and the conscience of us all. His contributions extend beyond novels, as he writes a regular column for Arutz Sheva and has a collection of op-eds titled "Writings" available.
The movie version of "Indecent Proposal" became a huge hit, and Engelhard was invited to the set courtesy of the novel's bestseller status. He even had a positive relationship with Redford, meeting him and his family during the filming. Adrian Lyne, the director, seemed nervous around Engelhard, perhaps perceiving the writer as a potential distraction.
In his book detailing his experiences, Engelhard recounts these encounters with world market royalty, offering a unique insight into the world of filmmaking. A reader even referred him to a specific column in "Writings," titled "Me and Esther Williams."
Sadly, Robert Redford passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of iconic roles and memorable films. His portrayal of the enigmatic businessman in "Indecent Proposal" will undoubtedly remain one of his most enduring performances.
Engelhard's other notable works include the anti-BDS thriller "Compulsive," further demonstrating his versatility as a writer. As we remember Redford and his contributions to world news, we also celebrate Engelhard's continued success in the literary world.
