The heightened tensions between Israel and Iran have cast a shadow over the safety situation in Germany. The interior ministers are keeping a close eye on the security of Jewish and Israeli establishments and are determined to thwart any impulsive actions on the streets. As a reaction to Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel, there's been an upsurge in violent assaults and hate speech. The Interior Ministers' Conference continues in Bremen until Wednesday.

Israel launched a widespread offensive against Iranian cities and nuclear sites during the night. Iran responded with over a hundred drones targeting Israel.

Will the Conflict Reach the UN Security Council?

German foreign policy expert Rolf Mützenich noted the urgency to quell the potential conflagration in the Middle East on the Deutschlandfunk. Israel has the right to defend itself, but this right should be exercised in light of a pressing threat and an existential danger. Mützenich hinted that the legality of Israel's actions will most likely be debated in the UN Security Council.

Mützenich also pointed out the peril posed by Iran's nuclear program, stating that "Tehran has been breaking the rules and spinning this spiral."

  • Context:The UN Security Council already held a meeting in June 2025 to discuss the situation between Israel and Iran. The Security Council session was instigated by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who denounced Israel's military actions as "acts of aggression and war crimes" and demanded international sanctions against Israel[4]. The UN meeting involved talks from various countries, with the U.S. urging Iran to resume negotiations and China expressing concern over the intensifying tension[2].

The escalating Middle East crisis, stemming from the heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, has raised concerns in Germany, bringing Iran's actions to the fore at the UN Security Council. German foreign policy expert Rolf Mützenich urged caution, advocating for Israel's right to self-defense yet emphasizing the necessity for such actions to be proportionate and in response to a pressing threat. The Security Council discussions may delve into the legality and repercussions of Israel's actions and Iran's non-compliance with nuclear regulations.
