In the tragic heart of June 15, 2025, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in the Israeli city of Bat Yam when an Iranian missile strike claimed the lives of five innocent souls, a family of Ukrainian origin who had come to Israel for medical respite.

The family in question includes young Anastasia (Nastia) Borik, a brave 8-year-old battling leukemia, who had been undergoing treatment at Sheba Medical Center in Israel. Unfortunately, the ruthless Iranian attack took her life along with her mother, Maria Peshkurova (31), grandmother, Olena Peshkurova (54), and two cousins, Konstantin Totvich (10) and Ilya Peshkurov (15)[2][1].

This family had journeys from their home in Odessa, Ukraine, in December 2022, seeking lifesaving medical care for Anastasia's leukemia[2]. The missile strike on their residential building was part of a series of over 400 Iranian missile attacks on Israel in recent days, which have resulted in 24 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. The Bat Yam attack was among the deadliest in this barrage, also causing casualties to four Israeli citizens[2].

Maria Peshkurova's whereabouts remain unknown following the attack, while rescue and military teams responded to the scene in the early hours following the missile strike[1][3]. The incident underscores the unfortunate human cost of the ongoing conflict and highlights the vulnerability of civilians, including those seeking medical refuge abroad.

Israel's President, Izchak Herzog, expressed his profound sorrow to Anastasia's father on social media platform X. "She came seeking life. Instead, she was murdered - along with her mother Maria, her young cousins Konstantin and Ilja, and her grandmother Lena - by a deadly Iranian rocket," Herzog shared. He further declared, "The world must condemn Iran's unforgivable crimes and stand by Israel against 'Tehran's regime of evil.'"

Israel had launched a significant air strike on Iranlast Friday to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb. The country views Iran's nuclear and missile programs as the foremost existential threat to the Jewish people. Since the commencement of the conflict, 24 people have been killed and over 800 injured in Israel according to official figures. In Iran, the human rights network, HRANA, based in the US, reports the deaths of 224 civilians and 188 injuries[4].
