In a horrific turn of events, the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has claimed at least five lives and injured numerous civilians in the cities of Kharkiv and Kherson. The devastating airstrikes, as reported by Ukrainian officials, have left an 14-year-old girl and an infant among the injured in Kharkiv alone.

"Kharkiv is bracing under the fiercest assault since the war's inception. A series of at least 40 explosions rocked the city over the past hour," announced Kharkiv's Mayor, Ihor Terechow, via Telegram. These attacks, which continued into the early hours, resulted in significant damage to 18 residential buildings and 13 private homes, leaving many apartments uninhabitable.

The gruesome impact wasn't limited to Kharkiv. Governor Oleksandr Prokudin of Kherson confirmed two civilian deaths, a tragic loss for a couple aged 54 and 56. A further 10 individuals were injured in the region.

A Call for Immediate Halt to Hostilities

The intense Russian airstrikes on Ukraine follow an alleged justification by Moscow—a response to Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian military bases over the weekend, which reportedly destroyed several aircraft. Ukraine is urgently appealing for a 30-day ceasefire without preconditions. However, the call has fallen on deaf ears, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far flatly rejected this proposition. The recent talks in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine failed to yield any significant progress in this regard.
