With the penultimate matchday of the 2. Bundesliga upon us, the race for promotion and relegation heats up. While SpVgg Greuther Fürth edges away from the drop zone, 1. FC Kaiserslautern clings to dreams of returning to the Bundesliga.
1. FC Kaiserslautern vs SV Darmstadt 98 – 2:1 (2:1)
Kaiserslautern holds onto its theoretical chance of reattaining Bundesliga status. The four-time champions edged past Darmstadt 98 2:1 (2:1) in an enthralling Southwestern derby, played out in front of 49,088 spectators. Marlon Ritter (15') converted a penalty following a foul on Jean Zimmer by Marseiler, and Ragnar Ache (45'+7') found the net to give FCK a hard-earned victory. Luca Marseiler (3') had initially given the guests the lead, but Kaiserslautern moved two points behind SV Elversberg, who currently occupy the third and final promotion spot.
On the final day, Kaiserslautern needs to win against Köln, while Elversburg, Paderborn, and Düsseldorf need to slip up for them to secure a promotion berth.
The early stages of the match saw Krahl, Kaiserslautern's goalkeeper, gifting the guests a lead - first with a careless pass, then with a hesitant clearance that allowed Marseiler to score. Darmstadt's Isac Lidberg's goal was controversially disallowed for offside (32'). Despite Darmstadt's continued pressure, Ache's 18th goal of the season in added time proved decisive, despite protests from the visitors who believed a potential goal from Fraser Hornby was unfairly blocked by referee Robin Braun.
The second half saw Darmstadt come close to equalizing, but Clemens Riedel failed to beat Krahl (49'). FCK became more passive as the game wore on, attempting to see out the match rather than push for further goals, leading to several dangerous moments for the hosts.
Hannover 96 vs SpVgg Greuther Fürth – 1:1 (0:1)
Fürth squandered a chance to all but secure their safety from relegation, as they drew 1:1 (1:0) with Hannover. With one point separating them from Eintracht Braunschweig in the relegation playoff spot, the pressure remains intense for the Franconians. Noel Futkeu (33') opened the scoring for the Kleeblatt, but they have now gone nine games without a win. Phil Neumann (87') levelled the scores for Hannover.
Hannover dominated possession but rarely created clear-cut chances, allowing Fürth to rely on counterattacks for their best opportunities. Futkeu's goal came from a well-worked corner, but Fürth retreated in the second half, offering Hannover numerous opportunities to score. Neumann eventually equalized from a corner, leaving Fürth to ponder a missed chance to solidify their safety.
SSV Jahn Regensburg vs Karlsruher SC – 2:2 (1:2)
Regensburg's dismal season continues, with the team set to be relegated following a 2:2 (1:2) draw against Karlsruher, sealing their fate even before the final matchday. The KSC, who had long surrendered their own promotion aspirations, also played out the game with little to show for it.
Marvin Wanitzek (4') and Dzenis Burnic (31') put the guests ahead, both goals coming courtesy of clever assists from Bambasé Conté. Rasim Bulic (17') and Eric Hottmann (66') each found the net for Regensburg, with both goals once again coming from corners - a frustrating trend for the home team against a well-drilled Karlsruher defense.
Regensburg gave it their all but could not match their opponents in terms of footballing quality. The final matchday of the season will see Regensburg bid farewell to the 2. Bundesliga with little celebration to be had.

FC Kaiserslautern and SV Darmstadt 98, Kaiserslautern moved two points behind SV Elversberg in the promotion race, losing their chance to directly qualify for the Bundesliga.
