End of the e-car subsidy: what now applies to those affected

The unexpected end of e-car incentives has left many people in a pickle. So, what happens now for those who previously applied or were too late to submit their applications by the deadline?

Though the eco-car subsidies were always expected to run out by the end of 2024, the precise termination date remained unknown until now. However, from December 18, the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) refused to accept any new applications for the environmental bonus.

The good news is that those who already have the approval for funding can still expect to receive the maximum 4500 euros. Nevertheless, as Katrin van Randenborgh, ADAC spokeswoman, points out, this is subject to the condition that there's still enough money left in the subsidy pot.

As for those who want to submit applications after the deadline, their hopes of joining the eco-car bandwagon are likely dashed, at least for now. But they may press politically or publicly for a review of the decision, as the loud criticism within the coalition is indicative of the situation's sensitivity.

Now that you've bought that e-car without the subsidy, can you change your mind and return it? While it's possible in some cases, it mostly depends on the agreement between you and the seller, such as if the environmental bonus was the basis for the purchase contract.

The ADAC and Hermann-Josef Tenhagen expect some manufacturers to offer additional discounts or incentives to remain competitive, especially in view of growing competition from China. In fact, as Tenhagen suggests, some manufacturers already have announced this move.

However, it's important to note that there's no legal basis for manufacturers to double down on government's share of the environmental bonus. Consumers should rely on any promises the dealer made, whether in writing or verbally, to secure any additional discounts.

Finally, it's crucial to explore alternative options, like European Union subsidies, loans and financing options, and tax credit options, to name a few. Some cities and municipalities might still offer local incentives, as well. Make the most of your research and stay informed to navigate this eco-car journey.
