Inthe city, folks who get their docs no longer need to forsake their original nationality. The law, revised last June, finally allows for the wondrous concept of dual citizenship.

Mayor Stephan Keller, in a heartfelt speech, welcomed the new citizens, stating, "Your presence adds an international flavor, making our city lively and robust." The naturalization process, he emphasized, is more than just a bureaucratic tale. It's a public pledge - of our country, our city, and the shared values we all hold dear. "With your innovative ideas, rich experiences, and unique perspectives, you enrich us and strengthen our democratic zest," he continued.

The revised citizenship law seems to have ignited a spark, causing a spike in naturalization applications as per city records. The Migration Office has received 3,415 applications between January 1 and May 31, 2025, an approximate 30% jump compared to the same period last year. By the end of May, 1,749 individuals had become citizens.

Fast forward to 2024, a total of 4,388 individuals were naturalized, with 7,259 applications received. The citizenship rush was chiefly led by Syrian nationals, followed closely by Russians, Turks, Iranians, and Ukrainians.

The surging wave of naturalizations can be broken down into three key aspects: statistics, reasons behind the surge, and the impact on the community. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data reveal a growing trend, with legislative changes in citizenship law often leading to an increase in naturalization applications and approvals[1].

Several factors encourage this spike, such as easier eligibility criteria, increased awareness, a favorable political climate, and economic and social integration incentives[2][5]. The new citizens not only boost political engagement and representation but also contribute economically, foster social cohesion, and access public services and benefits[3]. In essence, citizenship makes the city a better, more inclusive place.

1) The surge in naturalization applications in the city, as seen in the statistics from the Migration Office and USCIS, can be attributed to policy-and-legislation changes such as the revised citizenship law, as well as citizenship-related politics and general news which have encouraged more people to apply.

2) The revised citizenship law has played a significant role in enriching the city's political landscape, as the increased number of naturalizations, particularly among Syrian nationals, Russians, Turks, Iranians, and Ukrainians, has increased political engagement, representation, and access to public services and benefits, thereby strengthening the democratic zest of the city.
