Leipzig's European Championships: Dunkel and Eder Fall Short in All-Around Final
Leipzig—German gymnasts Nils Dunkel and Timo Eder concluded the all-around final of the Turn European Championships in Leipzig without a medal. Dunkel, a 28-year-old contender, was on the cusp of earning a medal for four apparatuses but faltered on the floor exercise, landing fifth with a combined score of 80.932 points. Eder, the mixed European champion, showed steady improvement throughout the competition but ended up 13th with 79.231 points after a shaky start.
Turkey's Adem Asil claimed the European title with an impressive score of 82.398 points. Leo Saladino of France took second place (81.430), followed closely by Krisztofer Meszaros from Hungary (81.164).
One day after clinching the mixed final title with Karina Schöenmaier (Chemnitz), the 19-year-old Eder started on the pommel horse with 13.066 points. Dunkel, a strong contender, grabbed 14.100 points on his specialty apparatus and ranked third after the first round. Eder scored 13.500 points on the rings, placing him at the top of the overall leaderboard. However, Eder slid to 23rd with 12.200 points on the next rotation.
Dunkel managed to maintain his position among the top three scorers with 13.266 points. Eder rallied back with 13.433 points on the parallel bars, maintaining that momentum with 13.900 points, finishing the competition in 15th place. Dunkel's trainer, Hubert Brylok, commended his 13.733 points, keeping his medal hopes alive.
On the other hand, Eder and coach Thomas Andergassen were satisfied with his 13.166 points. Unfortunately, Dunkel suffered points deductions before the last apparatus, with a score of 12.733. Nevertheless, he managed 13.466 points for his final exercise and scored 13.600 points overall, narrowly missing the podium.
