The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) recently co-organized a special session on the protection of religious sites under its auspices, in collaboration with Kazakhstan. This event was held as part of the ongoing Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, a forum aimed at strengthening peace, harmony, and interreligious dialogue.

The UNAOC, a key platform for promoting understanding and respect between civilizations, cultures, and religions, has been instrumental in organizing this significant event. The organization's consistent support and efforts have been praised by President Tokayev, who welcomed the UNAOC's involvement.

During the special session, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the UN Secretary-General's High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, was appointed as the UN Special Envoy on the promotion of interreligious dialogue, including combating Islamophobia. This appointment came in September 2020.

President Tokayev congratulated Moratinos on receiving the Astana International Prize for his significant contribution to interreligious dialogue. Moratinos expressed his hope that the outcomes of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions would contribute to strengthening peace, harmony, and interreligious dialogue.

Moratinos also praised the reforms being implemented in Kazakhstan during his meeting with the President. Kazakhstan attaches great importance to its cooperation with the UNAOC, as evidenced by their joint efforts in this special session.

The special session on the protection of religious sites was held under the auspices of the UNAOC, further underscoring the organization's commitment to promoting peace and understanding among different faiths. Miguel Ángel Moratinos was also appointed as the UN Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia, a role that aligns with the UNAOC's mission to foster dialogue and mutual respect.
