Emphasis on safeguarding Ukrainian concerns amplified prior to Trump-Putin discussions in Europe

The stage is set for a high-level diplomatic meeting as US President Donald Trump plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. This trilateral summit, also including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, is aimed at ending the war in Ukraine that has raged for over three years.

Despite hours-long meetings at Chevening producing significant progress, major points of contention remain. The proposed terms of the US-Russia-Ukraine trilateral summit focus on security guarantees for Ukraine with an aim toward a peace agreement. However, Russia's rejection of NATO troops in Ukraine and Ukraine's insistence on no limitations on its armed forces or its pathway to EU and NATO membership continue to be sticking points.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has called for "real peace" rather than temporary pauses in fighting, and he insists on strong sanctions on Russia if the summit falters or Russia evades a genuine end to the war. European leaders, on the other hand, emphasize "ironclad security guarantees" with no restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities and reject any Russian veto over Ukraine’s European and NATO ambitions.

Russia, via the Kremlin, has only agreed to appoint senior officials for continued talks and rejects any NATO military presence in Ukraine to enforce guarantees, reflecting persistent Russian conditions complicating progress.

If successful, the trilateral summit could pave the way for a concrete peace deal and possibly an end to the active war. However, continued Russian aggression and its refusal to commit to ending hostilities suggest the odds remain challenging. The US has signaled potential increased sanctions and continued provision of advanced weapons to Ukraine to pressure Russia, indicating a dual approach of diplomacy plus strong deterrence if negotiations stall.

European leaders express skepticism about the sincerity of Russian intentions, fearing the Kremlin aims at maximal territorial gains. This skepticism could mean that any summit may not achieve decisive results without stricter enforcement mechanisms.

As the summit approaches, Ukrainians remain defiant. Ukrainian troops still have a small foothold in Russia's Kursk region a year after they crossed the border. Olesia Petritska, a Ukrainian, expressed defiance, gesturing to hundreds of small Ukrainian flags in the Kyiv central square commemorating fallen soldiers.

The road to peace in Ukraine remains "bumpy," but the international community remains cautiously engaged in efforts to push for a peaceful resolution while readying to maintain pressure on Russia. European representatives have put forward a counterproposal, but details have not been disclosed. Russian forces are slowly advancing in Ukraine's east, but their summer offensive has so far failed to achieve a major breakthrough.

As the world watches, the trilateral summit represents a significant opportunity for peace, but the challenges are formidable. The situation remains fluid, with the US and European powers working diligently to navigate the complexities and push for a peaceful resolution.
