Emotional Dynamics amid Disputes: Exhibition "Mirror No. 3"

In the German drama film 'Miroirs No. 3,' directed by Christian Petzold and released in 2025, we follow the journey of a young pianist named Laura, played by Paula Beer. After an accident, Laura seeks refuge in Brandenburg, finding solace with an enigmatic woman named Betty, portrayed by Barbara Auer.

The movie begins with a light crime thriller tension, but Petzold swiftly shifts the focus towards exploring wounded souls. Laura and Betty, like lost ships drifting in an ocean of fate, find themselves entangled in a mysterious story that remains unsolved for much of the film's duration.

Barbara Auer delivers a breathtaking performance, portraying Betty with a vibrant tension that resonates through her silence, gazes, and forced cheerfulness. Her character, perhaps in her 60s, uses a smile to flee from life, especially from herself, as standing up against predetermined paths can be very painful.

Meanwhile, Laura, a pianist by profession, prepares to play a piece called 'A Boat on the Ocean.' The movie's title, 'Miroirs No. 3,' refers to a piece of piano music by Maurice Ravel, published at the beginning of the 20th century.

The narrative invites the audience to engage in a challenging exploration of fundamental questions of life. The necessity of talking to each other and listening to each other is emphasized as the essential foundation of coexistence. Feeling anger and tenderness should not be understood as opposite poles, but as a unity.

In the movie's finale, the story of the fateful summer for the protagonists remains close to reality, despite its fairy-tale beauty. The women must take control of their own lives to survive, a task that is not easy.

Director Christian Petzold wrote the screenplay for 'Miroirs No. 3,' which is the third installment in a trilogy exploring elemental themes and the supernatural. Petzold's intentions are perfectly brought to life by Paula Beer and Barbara Auer, who deliver compelling performances that make the film a must-watch.
