Emmys Awards 2025: Recap
In the world of television production, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held this past weekend, recognising the outstanding achievements in various technical and creative categories. This year, several notable editing teams were honoured for their contributions to some of the most popular shows on HBO Max, AppleTV+, and NBC.
Susan Vaill, ACE, and her assistant editor Stephanie Goldstein were among those celebrated for their work on HBO Max's talk show, Hacks. Their discussion on understanding notes and revisions, transitioning to directing, choosing licensed music, and more, was a highlight of the show.
The editing team behind Chimp Crazy, another HBO Max series, dissects how story structure influences the audience's emotions and the joy of a well-crafted montage. Meanwhile, the team responsible for The Penguin was nominated for three different episodes, with Henk van Eeghen, ACE, Meg Reticker, and Andy Keir as the nominees. The VFX family from The Penguin also won the Emmy for their work on episode 3, "Bliss."
The SNL50: Physical Comedy segment editing team, consisting of Ryan Spears, Paul Del Gesso, Christopher Salerno, Daniel Garcia, Sean McIlraith, and Ryan McIlraith, was another deserving recipient of an Emmy award.
In the realm of comedy editing, Eric Kissack, ACE, shared secrets of comedy editing and planning oners on The Studio (AppleTV+). Catherine Haight, ACE, and the Sirens (Netflix) editing team discussed the process of identifying emotional moments in music cues.
The editing team behind Ladies & Gentlemen...50 Years of SNL Music (NBC) also had a significant discussion, focusing on why many editors are also musicians, the value of a great assistant editor, and more.
Erin Sullivan, VFX Editor for The Penguin, used Mocha AE in her role on the series. Martyn Culpitt, VFX Supervisor at Image Engine, discussed the challenges of creating feature film VFX on a TV schedule for Dune: Prophecy (HBO Max).
Lastly, the company Accenture Song VFX, together with Pixomondo, received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for their work on the episode "Bliss" of The Penguin. Continuum was also recognised, receiving a 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy® Award.
The edited version of the ceremony can be watched on FXX at 8 p.m. ET/PT on September 13th or streamed on Hulu until October 7th. The Primetime Emmys will air this Sunday, September 14th, at 8pm ET/5pm PT, on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
