Emmys Awards 2023 Recap
The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing live on FOX on Monday, January 15th, at 8 p.m. ET, will honour the most outstanding achievements in television. Here's a glimpse of some of the nominated shows and the people behind them.
In the comedy category, FX's THE BEAR, helmed by first-time Emmy winner Joanna Naugle, ACE, has been making waves with its Michelin-worthy storytelling. Meanwhile, the Succession family (not to be confused with the Roys!) shared their experiences of editing with the show's intricate camera angles and unique takes.
On the drama front, HBO's A Black Lady Sketch Show, led by three-time Emmy winner Stephanie Filo, ACE, continues to shine. Filo's dramatic editing turn on Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story also earned her a nomination. The Last of Us, a gripping drama series, won the Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie award. The series was a collaborative effort by DNEG, WETA, Storm Studios, Distillery VFX, and HBO, with Wylie Co. handling comp QC work and using Mocha Pro in their pipeline.
The Emmy-winning duo behind The Last of Us, Timothy A. Good, ACE, and Emily Mendez, discussed the role of empathy in editing. Meanwhile, Liyana Mansor, a first-time nominee, shared insights into her role as a VFX Editor on Disney+'s Andor, using Continuum and Sapphire in her temp VFX compositing workflow.
Adam Balentine, discussing the visual effect challenges faced on Netflix's Shadow and Bone (season 2), highlighted the team's use of Silhouette for rotoscoping and paint work. Barnstorm VFX, on the other hand, used Mocha Pro for rotoscoping and tracking fixes on the final season of AppleTV+'s Ted Lasso.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held this past weekend, with several editors expressing their gratitude towards their assistant editors in a two-part series.
