Emma Mackey Plays the White Witch Role in Greta Gerwig's Narnia Film Adaptation

In a significant development for Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of "The Chronicles of Narnia," the role of Jadis the White Witch, the series' principal antagonist, has been assigned to Emma Mackey. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this marks a reunion for the director and Mackey, who previously worked together in "Barbie."

Previously, there had been speculation that Mackey, Charli XCX, and Margaret Qualley were contenders for the role, which was notably portrayed by Tilda Swinton in the 2005 Disney film and its sequels.

The new Narnia film is said to be based on "The Magician's Nephew," the sixth book in C.S. Lewis' youth-fantasy series. Walden Media initially planned to continue the earlier series by adapting "Nephew," but the contract with Lewis' estate expired. Attempts to adapt the remaining books ensued, leading Netflix to acquire the rights to continue the series with new films and shows.

In addition to Mackey as the White Witch, Meryl Streep has been announced to voice Aslan, the talking lion who allies with the Penvensies against the Witch. Further cast members are set to be unveiled as the film's release approaches, starting in theaters and subsequently on Netflix.

The production is still in the process of casting young actors for the central characters in "The Magician’s Nephew." To date, Daniel Craig and Carey Mulligan are among the confirmed cast members, with Craig expected to portray the uncle in the story and Mulligan set to play Digory's gravely ill mother.

Upcoming releases include the latest installments of "Marvel," "Star Wars," and "Star Trek," along with developments in the "DC Universe" on film and television, and updates on the future of "Doctor Who."
