Emiratis permitted to renew passports a year ahead in the UAE
In a move aimed at providing greater convenience and flexibility to its citizens, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has announced that UAE passport renewals can now be carried out up to one year before the current passport's expiry date. This change, effective from August 18, 2025, represents an extension from the previous rule which allowed renewal only within six months of expiry.
This policy change brings several benefits for UAE citizens, particularly frequent travelers and those involved in long-term visa procedures abroad.
Firstly, it offers greater flexibility for travel planning. By allowing passport renewal well in advance of expiry, citizens can plan their travels more effectively, avoiding last-minute rush and associated stress.
Secondly, it reduces the risk of last-minute renewal stress and bureaucratic delays, leading to smoother official transactions and better continuity in passport validity.
Thirdly, the convenience of the ICP’s fully digital platform comes into play. Citizens can now complete their renewals online, without the need to visit government offices. This is particularly beneficial for business travelers and families, saving them valuable time and effort.
The decision also supports the UAE’s broader digital transformation goals, promoting accessibility, security, and efficiency in passport and identity services.
The Emirati passport, already ranked among the strongest in the world, further enhances its global standing with this step. In 2025, it ranks 8th strongest worldwide, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 countries. This ranking marks a steady improvement from its 15th position in 2022 and 2023, and 11th position in 2024.
