Gun Culture on Social Media: A Global Concern

Gun culture on social media is a growing concern for the global community, with the glorification of weapons in songs, videos, and online content causing ripples across nations. Despite legal restrictions in many places, reports suggest that such content continues to exist.

A survey by an unnamed organisation in the US found that 54% of boys aged 10-17 watch gun-related content every week, and 32% of youth follow social media influencers who portray weapons as exciting. The internet, with its ability to blur cultural boundaries, allows such content to go viral in multiple countries.

The trend is not just alarming, but also dangerous. It can lead to increased fear and potential violence in schools, colleges, and the surrounding environment. In some cases, small debates on social media platforms have escalated into shootouts. Accidents involving guns while capturing videos have resulted in the loss of life for children and adults.

In an effort to combat this issue, police investigations like Operation Flush have been initiated. In the last six months, over 600 social media accounts have been investigated, and 55 people, including many teenagers, have been arrested.

However, the problem is not limited to one region. In Delhi, Operation 'Flush' resulted in the arrest of 55 people for posting videos showing off weapons. In Punjab, a traditional practice of waving guns at weddings or parties during celebrations has moved online. Even in Europe, despite stricter gun laws, images of guns are common in gang-related social media groups.

The fear of guns takes a toll on young minds, causing tension and anxiety in families. It is important to explain to people, especially young people, that showing off guns on social media can have serious consequences. Displaying weapons on social media can lead to a sense of insecurity among common people.

While some people keep guns for safety purposes or due to threats from gangsters or criminals, young people often post videos with weapons to appear cool or powerful. Social media algorithms amplify viral videos with guns, which spreads the cycle even faster.

If the trend of showing guns on social media does not stop, it could lead to violence and insecurity for the entire society. Regretting the consequences of this trend may be too late. It is crucial to address this issue proactively and educate people about the dangers associated with glorifying guns on social media.
