Hampshire's latest recruit, South African youngster Dewald Brevis, showcased his red-hot form with a stunning debut performance in the T20 Blast against Essex on Friday.
Having secured a contract with Hampshire in late March for the T20 Blast and two County Championship matches, the 21-year-old has been a standout player. He was a key contributor to MI Cape Town's historic SA20 title earlier this year, finishing as the sixth-highest run-scorer with 291 runs and hitting more sixes (25) than any other player in the competition.
Continuing his fine form, Brevis brought his aggressive batting style to the T20 Blast. After James Vince and Toby Albert laid a solid foundation with an 97-run opening stand, Brevis capitalized, scoring 80 runs off just 32 deliveries. His knock included six sixes and four fours, demonstrating his power-hitting abilities.
Despite falling for 34 off 54 balls in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 final against the Lions, Brevis has had a resurgence in his career following his breakout at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup.
Essex were no match for Brevis and Hampshire, who put on a total of 230-7. In response, Essex were bowled out for just 124, with Brevis contributing with two catches off Scott Currie's bowling.
Brevis' performances for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 have also been impressive, scoring 225 runs in six matches, at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180. He has emerged as one of the few bright spots in CSK's otherwise disappointing campaign this year.
