Tragedy at Harrison Lake: Man Drowns in Popular Recreational Destination
A tragic incident has occurred at Harrison Lake, a popular recreational destination in British Columbia's Fraser Valley. On Friday night, a man drowned in a lagoon area of Harrison Hot Springs. The Agassiz RCMP, Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department, and search and rescue teams were called to the scene at 11:20 p.m.
Despite an extensive search on Friday night, the man's body was not initially found. However, his remains were discovered during the search on Saturday. The RCMP has expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the man, and no further details about the incident will be released out of respect for the family.
The Harrison lagoon area was initially requested to be avoided by officers but has now reopened. The incident marks another sad addition to the growing list of summer drownings in British Columbia. According to OPP, there have been 10 drownings this year in various waterways.
Harrison Lake, glacier-fed, offers fishing, boating, and a sandy beach for swimming, picnicking, and other recreational activities. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety.
When visiting Harrison Lake, it is crucial to take stringent water safety measures. These include always wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) or life jacket when swimming, boating, or near the water. Swimming alone should be avoided; use the buddy system and stay in designated swimming areas.
Be aware of lake conditions, including cold glacier-fed water temperatures and possible currents. Do not swim in restricted or hazardous areas, especially near emergency operations or wildfire zones. Follow all instructions and warnings from local authorities, including evacuation orders or access restrictions related to ongoing hazards like the Bear Creek wildfire.
Stay clear of wildfire firefighting operations on the lake, as aircraft may be maneuvering and water is being drawn for firefighting efforts. Monitor local news and updates for safety advisories due to ongoing emergencies (wildfires, police investigations from recent drownings).
The incident occurred about 130 kilometres east of Vancouver. Police do not believe foul play to be a factor in the man's drowning. The area remains an active police investigation with the assistance of the fire department and search and rescue.
As we mourn this tragic loss, let us also remember to prioritise safety and caution when enjoying the beautiful waters of Harrison Lake.
