Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Traffic and Causes Waterlogging in Delhi

Delhi, India, is currently in the midst of a peak monsoon phase, with light to moderate rains expected to continue from August 13 to 16, 2025. The monsoon trough remains close to the capital, leading to intermittent showers and thundershowers with increasing intensity from August 14 to 17.

On Independence Day (August 15), the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with a mild breeze in the early morning during the Red Fort celebrations, and there is a possibility of light rain showers during the event. Rainfall intensity and spread are expected to increase throughout the day.

Rainfall amounts are projected to grow from about 8.3 mm on August 14 to over 15 mm on August 15, slightly decreasing thereafter but remaining significant. The overcast and wet conditions are forecast to persist through the weekend, with sporadic heavy spells of rain and thundershowers occurring at isolated places within Delhi-NCR.

The heavy rainfall has led to localized waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, causing traffic congestion and slowdowns on major thoroughfares such as Connaught Place, Mathura Road, and the vicinity of Bharat Mandapam's Gate No. 7. Flight schedules at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have also been delayed due to the rain.

Indigo Airlines has advised passengers to expect delays and check flight status online before heading to the airport. The airline has also stated that several roads across Delhi are currently blocked or experiencing slow movement due to the rain. Indigo Airlines has urged passengers to allow extra time and take an alternate route if possible.

The Delhi Fire Services has received an emergency call related to a building collapse in the Hari Nagar area of Jaitpur, South East Delhi, and immediately sent fire engines to the incident site. The rain has brought some relief from the persistent humidity, with air quality improving to a moderate AQI of 116 as recorded on Friday. The IMD forecasted a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25 degrees Celsius for the day.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain updated on weather advisories. With the potential for more rain showers and thundershowers, it is essential for commuters to plan for extra travel time and stay informed about traffic conditions. Despite the disruptions, Delhi will celebrate Independence Day as planned, with possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions associated with the heavy rainfall typical of peak monsoon conditions.

Finance ministers may need to reconsider their defi strategies due to escalating inflation resulting from the heavy rainfall and subsequent waterlogging in Delhi. General-news outlets report traffic disruptions on major thoroughfares like Connaught Place, Mathura Road, and Bharat Mandapam's Gate No. 7, potentially affecting the city's commerce and finance market. The weather forecast indicates cumulative rainfall amounts reaching over 15 mm on Independence Day, causing sporadic heavy showers that might continue until the weekend, thus influencing market trends.
