Emergency sites in Nizhny Novgorod decrease by a third, with 37% fewer locations available
In the city of Nizhny Novgorod, a significant decrease in road accident hotspots has been reported, according to the MCKU "Center for Road Traffic Organization of Nizhny Novgorod." The report, released in 2025, compared the data from 2023 and found a reduction of 37%.
The decrease was primarily achieved through road repairs, the addition of extra lanes, and widening of roadways. One such example is the road section on Reshetnikov Street, which was repaired ahead of schedule as part of a national project.
Recent safety-enhancing measures in Nizhny Novgorod, however, extend beyond physical infrastructure improvements. The focus has shifted towards heightened training for drivers, particularly in emergency response and the safe transport of hazardous materials. Participants in safety programs in the Nizhny Novgorod region have been trained on essential safety measures, proper use of equipment, and emergency response protocols, aimed at improving overall road safety.
This emphasis on training is particularly relevant given recent serious accidents, such as a tanker carrying liquefied carbon dioxide exploding after a collision on the M-12 highway in Arzamas district of Nizhny Novgorod. Such incidents underscore the importance of proper training and emergency response procedures.
While no direct official road infrastructure changes or black-spot specific engineering solutions were mentioned in the available information, the regional emphasis on training related to safety measures and emergency response indicates a strategic approach to reduce accident severity and improve incident management at known hotspots.
It's worth noting that some connectivity issues affecting public transportation and emergency services due to mobile Internet disruptions have been reported in the region. However, authorities have pledged to expand public Wi-Fi availability to mitigate these challenges.
No specific government-led black-spot improvement programs or traffic management modifications unique to Nizhny Novgorod were found in the recent data. However, nationally, India launched the Sadak Suraksha Mitra program focusing on black-spot audits and youth engagement in road safety, but this does not pertain to Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
In addition to the modernization of the traffic light at the intersection of Gagarin Avenue and Studencheskaya Street, the city continues to implement safety measures aimed at further reducing road accident hotspots and improving overall road safety. The decrease in the number of recorded hotspots from 68 in 2023 to 43 in 2024 is a promising step towards achieving this goal.
