Emergency responders repeatedly called to tackle storm-related incidents
In the early hours of Tuesday, 9th September, the Dormagen Fire Department was called into action as heavy thunderstorms and showers hit the city and surrounding areas. The main areas affected were Dormagen city center, Horrem, and Zons.
The operations, which began around 9:30 PM on Monday, 8th September, saw the deployment of units from Stadtmitte, Zons, Delhoven, Stürzelberg, and the full-time watch. The volunteer fire department of Dormagen also provided support to neighbouring cities Grevenbroich and Neuss, responding to a total of 15 storm-caused accidents besides Dormagen itself.
One of the hardest-hit locations was the underpass at Zonser Straße, where emergency services were called to attend to flooding. Other affected areas included the sports halls of the Rachel-Carson School in Horrem on Bahnhofstraße, the sports halls of TSV Bayer Dormagen at An der Römerziegelei, and a large supermarket.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the operations, and all operations were completed by around 1:30 AM. The Dormagen Fire Department handled a total of 15 storm-related incidents throughout the night.
According to the German Weather Service, rainfall of between 35 and 60 liters per square meter was expected within six hours until 11 AM on Tuesday morning. Locally, heavy thunderstorms or showers could even bring up to 90 liters per square meter.
Despite the challenging conditions, the Dormagen Fire Department managed to successfully complete all operations, ensuring the safety of the community during the stormy night. The department's quick response and effective management of the incidents were commendable, demonstrating their dedication to the safety and wellbeing of the city and its residents.
