Train Derailment in Riedlingen, Germany, Leaves Casualties
In an unfortunate incident, a train derailment occurred in Riedlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on the evening of July 27, 2025. The incident took place around 6:10 p.m. local time, affecting a Regional Express train with about 100 passengers on board.
Two of the train's four carriages partially left the tracks in a wooded area, due to debris from a landslide triggered by a storm that had passed through the region earlier that day. The front of the train was lifted about 16 feet up a slope and collided with trees.
The aftermath of the derailment was tragic, with at least three people losing their lives and around 34 to 50 others sustaining injuries, some in critical condition. The injured passengers were promptly evacuated from the site and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Hundreds of responders, including firefighters, police, emergency medical personnel, Deutsche Bahn staff, and military units, were involved in the rescue efforts. Specialized equipment such as heavy cranes was planned to be brought in to lift and clear the overturned carriages. Search teams with rescue dogs inspected the scene to ensure no victims were trapped beneath the wreckage.
The affected passengers were relocated to a nearby community center for assistance. The incident affected multiple districts, including the Biberach district where Riedlingen is located. Ulm emergency services assisted with treating the injured using a mobile medical facility designed for mass casualty events.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly expressed condolences and instructed government ministers to provide full support for rescue operations. The exact cause of the derailment is still under investigation, with storm-related debris on the tracks identified as a probable factor. Deutsche Bahn is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigations.
In addition to the firefighters from Ulm and the Alb-Donau district, ASB volunteers were present at the scene, providing assistance. The Red Cross was also involved in the response efforts. Special vehicles were utilized in the response to the train derailment.
As the community of Riedlingen and the affected passengers begin to recover from this unfortunate event, our thoughts remain with those who have been affected.
