Embracing intimacy with the troubadour extraordinaire

Verdi embraced the task of orchestrating 'Macbeth', staying true to its original form, and additionally undertook 'Otello' and 'Falstaff' productions. However, 'King Lear' remained unfinished.

The Regio Theatre is set to host the 25th edition of the Verdi Festival, a prestigious event that aims to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of Giuseppe Verdi's cultural heritage. This year, the festival will feature three of Verdi's Shakespearean operas: Macbeth, Otello, and Falstaff.

Falstaff will see a reprise of Jacopo Spirei's staging, under the direction of Michele Spotti. Meanwhile, the inaugural Otello production will be curated by Linda B. Fairtile of the University of Richmond, Virginia. Gabriele Dotto, scientific director of the Historical Archive of Ricordi, will curate the Falstaff production.

The critical editions of Otello and Falstaff are still in preparation for the University of Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi. These editions aim to recover or rectify details of Verdian notation that had been lost or corrupted in traditional printed editions, providing conductors, singers, and the orchestra with a thoughtful and reliable guide for interpreting the masterpieces.

The National Institute of Verdian Studies is collaborating closely with the Verdi Festival for its 2025 edition. The institute's involvement underscores the festival's commitment to enhancing Verdi's legacy on an international level.

The Verdi Festival has attributed to itself the role of enhancing the heritage and legacy of Verdi on an international level. This is evident in the interpretive approach that aims for rigorous philological and scientific accuracy in restoring Verdi's music. The festival strives to present productions with maximum faithfulness to the original score.

The secret of the Verdi Festival lies in its interpretive approach to Verdi's music. The festival's goal is to promote a deeper knowledge and fuller appreciation of Verdi's works, and it achieves this through its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to authenticity.

In addition to the main operatic programme, the Verdi Off collateral program is also part of the festival's 2025 edition. This initiative aims to re-propose the Verdian spirit in updated and provocative terms.

The first performance of Otello at the Regio will be conducted by Roberto Abbado, directed by Federico Tiezzi, and feature sets by Margherita Palli. The version of Macbeth included in the operatic program is the original one written and directed by Verdi for the Teatro della Pergola in Florence in 1847.

A highlight of the Verdi Festival 2025 will be the presentation of the Medal of the President of the Republic during the event. This honour is a testament to the significance and impact of the festival in the world of opera.

The competition among titled institutions in Italy and around the world is significant in the context of Verdi enhancement. The Verdi Festival stands out for its commitment to authenticity, its collaborative approach, and its dedication to promoting a deeper understanding of Verdi's works. The 25th edition promises to be a celebration of these values and a testament to the enduring appeal of Verdi's operas.
