In the heart of Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, a unique initiative is underway to combat drug-related threats and promote community safety. The "Astana - City Without Drugs" project, now in its third year, offers free self-defense training sessions until September 1st.

This project, organized by MMA World Champion Vasily Takhtai, is a practical response to the city's ongoing fight against the drug trade. It aligns with broader national security measures and community health goals, aiming to empower residents by enhancing their personal safety and resilience.

The sessions, held in Triathlon Park and "Koktal" parks, are open to everyone, regardless of age or disability. They are supported by the Physical Culture and Sports Department of Astana Akimat and are conducted outdoors, making it easier for participants. Coaches and even professional athletes are present during the training sessions, ensuring a supportive and knowledgeable environment.

Rustem Musin, an Astanachan, is one of the many attendees. He participates in both the free sessions in the park and those in a gym that are free for specific groups. Musin feels much better and has improved endurance due to the training sessions, and his family supports him.

Moscow resident Pavel Yurkov shared his positive impressions of the free training sessions, citing the well-rounded individuals and supportive environment. Many people attend the training sessions with great enthusiasm.

Azamat Agzamov, Acting Head of the Physical Culture and Sports Department of Astana Akimat, stated that the project is part of efforts to promote mass sports in the capital. He noted that the Akimat has supported the project for the second year and allows participants to train for free.

The project's history and goals tie to Kazakhstan's ongoing fight against the drug trade, which involves multidimensional efforts including blocking illegal drug accounts, shutting down drug supply channels, and preventing smuggling across borders. The initiative leverages community engagement through training sessions in self-defense as a practical way to reduce vulnerability, especially among youth, helping to build a safer and drug-free city environment.

While specific details about the organizing bodies of the free self-defense sessions were not found, such programs typically receive backing from local law enforcement agencies, municipal administrations, and sometimes partner with NGOs focused on drug prevention and social welfare. This reflects the government’s broader strategy to create a secure urban environment by combining law enforcement, social programs, and citizen empowerment.

The "Astana - City Without Drugs" project uses free self-defense training as a community-centered tool to contribute to the overarching goal of reducing drug-related harm and fostering a safer city. It is supported by extensive government anti-drug operations and border security enhancements, creating a comprehensive approach to community safety and well-being.
