The much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The summit marked the first time a Russian presidential visit to the U.S. was held on a U.S. military property.

The decision to hold the summit in Alaska was met with enthusiasm by Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy. The potential locations for the meeting were speculated to be the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, and the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage. However, the exact location remained undisclosed until the White House announced the venue.

The Elmendorf-Richardson military base has a precedent of hosting a meeting between a US President and a foreign leader, as seen when President Nixon met Emperor Hirohito of Japan in 1971. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport also has a history of hosting an international meeting, having welcomed Reagan and Pope John Paul II in 1984. The Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage has hosted both foreign leaders and US Presidents in recent years, although not simultaneously.

The summit was set against the backdrop of concerns about potential disruptions to flight schedules, port calls by large tourist liners, and road traffic due to the summit. Shannon McCarthy, a spokesperson for Alaska's Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, warned about potential road delays due to the arrival of VIPs. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also published a notice that airspace around Anchorage would be closed on Friday due to VIP flights.

The presidents' meeting in Alaska followed their previous encounters. The most recent meeting took place at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan on June 28, 2019, and lasted over an hour. Their first one-on-one meeting took place in Helsinki on July 16, 2018, and lasted over two hours. During the Helsinki meeting, the presidents discussed the situation in Ukraine, the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. During the Osaka meeting, the topics discussed included Iran, Ukraine, Syria, and Venezuela.

The presidents had a brief conversation during a dinner at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires on a date that was originally scheduled for a full meeting, but was canceled by Donald Trump on November 29, 2018. During the Osaka meeting, the presidents agreed that improving relations between Russia and the U.S. is in the interest of the global community. Vladimir Putin also gifted Donald Trump an official 2018 FIFA World Cup ball during the Helsinki meeting.

The historic summit in Alaska brings a significant milestone in the relationship between the U.S. and Russia, and marks a new chapter in international diplomacy.
