Elon Musk unveils plans for a new political group, presumably taking lead role

In a bold move, tech mogul Elon Musk has announced the establishment of a new political party, the 'America Party'. The party aims to disrupt the long-standing two-party system in the United States and focus on gaining House and Senate seats in the upcoming midterm elections.

The America Party's platform is centred around the concept of restoring freedom to American citizens by moving away from what Musk describes as a wasteful, ineffective two-party system. Musk, who has an estimated net worth of around $360 billion, believes he can significantly influence election outcomes at various levels.

Key goals of the America Party include breaking the dominance of the two major parties (Republicans and Democrats) in U.S. politics, providing voters with a choice that prioritises government efficiency and fiscal responsibility, and supporting candidates who oppose recent expansive tax and spending measures. The party also aims to win congressional seats in the 2026 midterms to establish a significant political presence.

Musk has sought input from the public via social media polls, reflecting a strong interest in a new political alternative that promises more independence from traditional party politics. However, the success of the America Party is uncertain, as demonstrated by Musk's previous election investments yielding mixed results.

The announcement marks a significant turning point in Musk's feud with former ally, President Donald Trump. The two had a public spat in early June, with both men exchanging harsh accusations on social media. Musk's support for Trump's campaign was substantial, with over $250 million invested, but he has since criticised Trump's signing of the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', a large tax and spending bill, demanding more significant spending cuts.

Musk, who initiated the 'America Party' on Saturday via his platform X, has not specified his role within the party, but his involvement could potentially make him a rival to Trump. The 'America Party' aims to "restore freedom" to American citizens, as previously stated.
