Halle, Germany - As the defendant settled into the courtroom chair, an imposing contingent of law enforcement officers huddled in the corridor, clad in masks.

On a chilly Thursday, members of the elite police force amassed outside the district court, their intended prey: two notorious anarchists. The prosecutor's office embattled them with accusations of arson and attempted homicide.

Inside Leipzig District Court, 10 am, room 108: The trespassing appeal began. The accused duo: Lisa H (28) and Joris J (33), two ardent anarchists. The accusations against them were relatively meager: both alleged to have partaken in the occupation of an empty home in the Eisenbahnstraße district in 2020.

Neither contended to pay their 350 euro fines. In the courtroom: a dozen sympathizers of the two anarchists. But the enigmatic Joris J was absent. He was represented by his defense lawyer.

While the proceedings raged within, an assembly of masked MEK police officers occupied positions outside the courtroom since 11 am - prepared to act. The police and prosecutor's office indicted Lisa H for inciting an arson attack on Deutsche Post in Lilienstraße on January 16, 2023. Two vehicles disintegrated, three were scorched to the core. The damage: a daunting 100,000 euros.

Anarchist Escapes Elusive Captors

The audience grew restless during the trial as they caught sight of the masked police officers. The defendant even refused to leave the courtroom during a rare recess. To alleviate the tension and prevent the situation from deteriorating, the MEK officers withdrew.

Four plainclothes investigators took their stead. The tactic bore fruit; by 1 pm, Lisa H exited the court corridor and was escorted into a nearby room by investigating officers and her lawyer. The search warrant was presented to her there.

Concurrently, an impressive phalanx of police officers converged on Eichendorffstraße and Wurzner Straße to search residences. Joris J was not found during the raids. He is alleged to have hurled a Molotov cocktail at cops in Leipzig on so-called "Day X" (June 3).
