Elijah Canlas-led film titled 'Water Sports' is set to create a significant impact at the New York Film Festival
The short film "Water Sports", a captivating blend of love, basketball, and science fiction, is set to make a splash at the prestigious New York Film Festival (NYFF) in 2025. Directed by Whammy Alcazaren and produced by Alemberg Ang, this frenzied sci-fi fantasy promises a unique and engaging experience.
Featuring Elijah Canlas, "Water Sports" unfolds in a world ravaged by climate change, where the protagonists Jelson and Ipe, two students deeply in love, prepare for survival. Their teacher's belief that strength of heart and mind can overcome any challenge forms the backbone of this heartfelt story.
The film's selection for the Currents section at the 63rd NYFF marks a significant milestone for both Alcazaren and Ang. This is a return to NYFF for Alcazaren, underscoring the film's presence in a prestigious festival lineup for that year.
In addition to the NYFF screening, "Water Sports" is set to appear at six other international film festivals. These include Minikino Film Week in Bali, Kyiv International Short Film Festival in Ukraine, Drama International Short Film Festival in Greece, BUT Film Festival in the Netherlands, Binisaya Film Festival in Cebu, and Silhouette Festival in Paris.
Prior to "Water Sports", Ang had collaborated with Maris Racal on the film "Sunshine". This project, too, has achieved recognition, having won awards at Berlinale and enjoying a month-long run in the Philippines. Ang expressed gratitude towards fellow independent producers and reflected on the lonely nature of filmmaking.
Unfortunately, Ricky, a person known to Ang, was not present to celebrate the news about the film's international screenings. Despite this, Ang expressed gratitude towards Squareeyes Film for securing the opportunities for "Water Sports" to travel to these festivals.
The theme of "Water Sports" revolves around the idea that perhaps the truest way to endure the apocalypse is to simply live, laugh, and love. As we eagerly await the film's release, we can't help but be reminded of the resilience and hope that lies within these simple, yet profound, actions.
