Electricity shortage impedes the completion and transfer of Gichugu housing project

The Gichugu Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) in Kirinyaga County has completed close to 110 units, with 75% already booked by prospective buyers. However, the occupation of these homes is delayed due to a lack of electricity connection [2].

Engineer Samuel Wambugu, the project's contractor, expressed regret that the delay in installing the necessary transformer by Kenya Power has hindered the handover of the houses to buyers. Housing officials have emphasized that this is the sole significant impediment to occupying the houses [2].

Despite being paid Sh6.8 million for the connection, Kenya Power has yet to install the transformer four months after the project's completion. This lack of electricity supply prevents homeowners from moving into their new homes [2].

The Gichugu AHP has not only provided affordable housing but also empowered local artisans from Kirinyaga East by providing them with opportunities to supply materials for construction. The project has created job opportunities and changed the image of the Kianyaga market [2].

The Director of Housing in the Central region, Albert Gakuru, appreciates the workmanship at the Gichugu Affordable Housing Programme. He encourages locals to take advantage of the investment opportunities provided by the programme [2].

Interestingly, the project has also benefited individuals like Mercy Wanjiku, a construction and engineering student, who gained practical experience during her studies and industrial attachment [1].

In a related development, another affordable housing project is close to completion in Nanyuki town, with the installation of sewer lines and electricity already in progress.

The Gichugu Affordable Housing Programme involved the community and completed the civil works ahead of time, according to Gakuru [2]. Furthermore, unskilled workers received certifications from the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) after excelling in their assignments [2].

As the delay in electricity connection persists, investors are seeking more land to establish high-end hotels, indicating a growing interest in the region [2]. Despite the challenges, the Gichugu Affordable Housing Programme continues to make a significant impact in the community.

The delay in installing electricity connections by Kenya Power is causing a hindrance in the occupation of homes at the Gichugu Affordable Housing Programme, preventing homeowners from moving in. Additionally, the lack of electricity has not stopped the momentum of other developments, such as politics, health, or sports, as the programme has significantly impacted the community and the economy of Kirinyaga County.
