Berlin, Germany - Preparations for the House of Representatives election in Berlin, scheduled for September 20, 2026, are in full swing. The city's chief electoral officer, Stephan Bröchler, has initiated the process, involving meetings with the districts to decide on the number of polling stations.

The election will be a significant event, with approximately 40,000 election helpers required to ensure its smooth running. These helpers will be responsible for various tasks, such as managing polling stations, distributing ballots, and overseeing the voting process. The district election offices are seeking declarations of availability from all interested parties as election helpers.

Those who have previously helped at elections and agreed to data storage will be contacted directly by the responsible district election offices. For first-time voters in Berlin, aged 16 and above with German citizenship, the opportunity to declare their availability as election helpers is open. However, it remains unclear if there will be any specific requirements for first-time voters who wish to become election helpers.

The election will determine the composition of the state parliament and the twelve district assemblies. For the first time, 16- and 17-year-old Berliners with German citizenship will be able to vote in the House of Representatives election.

Discussions with printers regarding the large number of ballots needed for the election are ongoing. The election will require a substantial number of ballots, and the printers are working diligently to meet the demand.

The possibility of referendums alongside the election for the House of Representatives is still uncertain. If they occur, the number of polling stations and election helpers may need to be increased to prevent long waiting times at polling stations on election day. Chief electoral officer Bröchler is preparing for up to three potential referendums.

As the date of the election approaches, it is essential that all eligible voters and potential election helpers stay informed about the process. More details about the declaration of availability and other important information will be released in due course.
