News Article: Local Self-Government Elections in Yakutia Scheduled for September 14

The local self-government elections in Yakutia, Russia, are set to take place on September 14, 2025. The elections will see residents of 100 villages across 30 districts casting their votes for the head of settlements, and four district centers (Aldan, Berdigestyakh, Ytyk-Kyuel, Pokrovsk, and Chersky) electing their district heads.

The candidate registration phase is currently underway, with 1821 candidates having submitted their documents for the elections. Election commissions have 10 days to decide on registration or rejection. A total of 222 election campaigns are being held across Yakutia.

The youngest candidate for the position of settlement head is 22 years old, while the oldest contender is 71. The nomination and document submission period ended on August 4, 2025. As of August, the exact number of candidates and district head nominees is not directly available, but it is expected that the elections will reflect the trend of candidates being nominated primarily by dominant political groups, such as United Russia.

In district council elections, women candidates make up 20.5%, while at the municipal level, it's 51%. A total of 39 applications have been submitted for 15 district council seats. The number of self-nominated candidates and party representatives is as follows: 630 self-nominated, 945 from United Russia, 79 from Fair Russia - Patriots of Russia, 72 from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, 51 from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, 42 from the New People party, 1 from the Rodina party, and 1 from the Communists of Russia party.

The process and competition in local elections vary significantly by region, with some areas seeing very limited genuine competition. In recent years, municipal autonomy has been gradually reduced through reforms strengthening centralized control. This trend is likely to be reflected in the Yakutia elections, but precise and up-to-date figures will be available closer to or after the election date in late 2025.

For candidates who submitted their documents on the last day, August 4, the final deadline for election commissions to make a decision is August 13. The elections will take place across the entire republic, except for Yakutsk, Zhatai, Anabar, and Zhigansky districts.

In spring 2025, a new law on local self-government was signed by Vladimir Putin, which has caused political shifts and some backlash among regional leaders in Russia. This could potentially influence candidate nominations and electoral competitiveness in regions, including Yakutia.
