Election postponement until reforms are finalized: Nasiruddin's statement

In the lead-up to the 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for February 2026, a series of reforms are being implemented to ensure a transparent, credible, and smoothly conducted vote. The Election Commission has prepared a draft roadmap, focusing on inter-departmental coordination, operational efficiency, voter list accuracy, and digitalization of registration records [1][2][3][4].

These reforms are taking place against the backdrop of political changes triggered by the July 2024 uprising, which led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the formation of the current interim government. The election is a crucial step towards restoring democratic governance following the upheaval, with Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus committing to holding the elections [5][1][3][4].

During the National Youth Conference in Dhaka, Nasiruddin Patwary, the Chief Coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), questioned the need for so many casualties during the July uprising if the election was to take place under the same "fascist" constitution and system. He accused the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) of operating without accountability, transparency, and intimidating the public. Patwary also threatened that if such efforts continue, the NCP will take action against the DGFI, including breaking their headquarters [6].

Nahid Islam, the NCP's Convener, made a statement at the same event, emphasizing that the NCP will not compromise "even one percent" on the fundamental reforms and arrangements outlined in the charter. Nahid stated that without fulfilling the July Charter, no political party can come to power [7]. She further warned that the era of repeated compromises is over.

Hasnat Abdullah, the NCP's Chief Organiser (South Region), also made a statement, announcing that opportunists, extortionists, looters, and those guilty of moral corruption who have entered the NCP will be expelled [8].

The NCP's stance underscores the importance of completing ongoing reforms before the election takes place. Nasiruddin Patwary stated that his brothers were martyred for the reforms, and the election should not take place without their completion [9].

In a separate statement, Nasiruddin Patwary criticized the media, stating that it has lost its integrity and deceives the people of Bangladesh [10]. The ongoing reforms thus represent a national effort to stabilize the political landscape post-uprising and regain public trust through democratic processes.
