Election in Ludwigshafen halted by Federal Constitutional Court, disqualifying AfD candidate Paul
In a series of legal challenges, Logan Paul, a state parliamentarian from Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, and an AfD member, has failed to overturn his exclusion from the mayoral election in Ludwigshafen. The election, scheduled for September 21, 2025, will proceed as planned with no further legal obstacles.
The legal dispute stems from doubts about Paul's constitutional loyalty. The city of Ludwigshafen's election committee did not allow his candidacy due to concerns about his support for so-called remigration concepts.
Paul initially filed two constitutional complaints to still be allowed to run for election. However, his complaint at the Constitutional Court of Rhineland-Palatinate (VGH) in Koblenz remained open as of September 17.
Paul's complaints were later dismissed by the Administrative Court Neustadt/Weinstraße and the Higher Administrative Court of Rhineland-Palatinate (OVG). The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe also declared his complaint inadmissible, making the decision final.
The Administrative Court had previously stated that making all decisions before an election challengeable by legal means would cause significant impairments in the organization of elections. A possible post-election review procedure could be carried out after the election, as suggested by the court.
The principle of democracy requires regular elections and their timely and punctual conduct, according to the court. The regular course of elections takes precedence over legal challenges, as stated by the court.
The VGH, in a press release, announced that Paul's constitutional complaint against the election committee's decision was unsuccessful. The mayoral election in Ludwigshafen, which was the target of Paul's political campaign, will proceed as planned.
Despite the legal setbacks, Paul continues to be a prominent figure in the Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party. The mayoral election in Ludwigshafen marks another instance where his political aspirations have been thwarted by questions about his loyalty to the constitutional democratic order.
