Election 2025: Contributors and Voters Advised to Maintain Rule Compliance During Period of Silence

IN SINGAPORE'S GENERAL ELECTION: From Friday, May 2 onwards, known as Cooling-off Day, all political campaigning will cease. This ban includes new political advertising and any conduct that could be perceived as campaigning. The Elections Department (ELD) advises both candidates and voters to steer clear of such activities during this period to allow voters an unbiased environment to contemplate election issues before casting their votes.

During this cooling-off period, the display or publication of election advertising is off-limits. This prohibition encompasses sharing, resharing, reposting, or boosting of online election advertising, along with publishing election surveys and exit polls.

A key exception to this ban involves reports in newspapers, on radio, and television relating to election matters, as well as approved traditional election advertising that was displayed before Cooling-off Day and hasn't been moved, altered, or modified. Lawful pre-Cooling-off Day online election advertising and private communications within closed chats or small groups of family and friends sharing election-related content are also permitted.

Keep in mind that digitally generated or manipulated content that misrepresents a candidate's speech or actions is prohibited, and foreign individuals cannot participate in election activities like publishing or displaying election advertising. The rules are firmly enforced in Singapore, with articles categorized as unauthorized paid election advertising being blocked to adhere to these regulations.

These Cooling-off Day rules serve to create a level playing field for voters, allowing them to make informed decisions free from the pressure and influence of last-minute campaigning or misinformation.
