Taiwan's KMT Chairperson Election Heats Up

The race for the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairperson is heating up, with several candidates vying for the position. The KMT chairperson election is scheduled for October 18, and the registration period closed yesterday.

Among the candidates is former Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin, who registered his candidacy in Taipei. Hau is accompanied by Chiang Ken-huang, New Taipei City Council Speaker, and KMT legislators Lai Shyh-bao, Wang Hung-wei, and Chang Chia-chun.

Hau has expressed his intentions to unify the party and facilitate cooperation with the Taiwan People's Party. He criticized the current administration, led by President William Lai, stating that Lai's ideology has worsened cross-strait relations. Hau also accused Lai of initiating the mass recall campaign targeting opposition lawmakers, which he believes unsettled society and led the country nowhere.

In a separate development, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus elected Legislator Chen Pei-yu as secretary-general. The DPP caucus secretary-general election had four candidates, with Chung receiving 43 votes. Legislator Chung Chia-pin was elected as the caucus's chief executive, and Legislator Wang Shih-chien, outgoing caucus chief executive Rosalia Wu, and Chen each received one vote in the DPP caucus secretary-general election.

The DPP, according to Hau, did not reflect on its mistakes and manipulated ideology, echoing the US' theory of Taiwan's undetermined status with its "distorted view of Taiwanese independence." Ker Chien-ming will remain as whip in the DPP caucus.

Hau Lai-chung, another candidate for KMT chairperson, showed reporters calligraphy reading "selfless" in Chinese, stating it represents his motivation for running in the race. Chang Ya-chung, another candidate, promised that, if elected, he would not allow war to break out in Taiwan and would reinstate the Guidelines for National Unification.

The upcoming KMT chairperson election is expected to be a significant event in Taiwan's political landscape, with the candidates presenting their visions for democracy, freedom, stability, and prosperity. The election will likely shape the course of Taiwan's relations with China and the international community in the coming years.
