Charlie-Town's Deputy District Mayor Dumped: Wagner Out, Wagon of Trouble In

Mayor Wagner successfully secured the position of being elected as the city's leader. - Elected as Deputy District Mayor: Mr. Wagner

Looks like the long-running political game in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin, has taken a decisive turn with the eviction of Deputy District Mayor, Detlef Wagner.

In a nail-biting vote at the District Assembly (BVV), Wagner was given the boot with a thumping 40 to 6 yes votes, three abstentions, and one invalid vote. This landing strip of yes nods clearly reached the necessary two-thirds majority to roll the CDU politician out of the council post for youth and health.

Now, who called for the boot? Representatives from SPD, Left, and FDP in the district parliament, that's who! They accused Wagner of some flagrant misconduct concerning a side hustle and funding allocation, and that's what led to the no-confidence motion.

But ol' Detlef ain't buying it, son! He's been holed up in non-profit project "Jehi 'Or Jewish Education Center for Democracy - Against Anti-Semitism" since 2019, and by golly, he's one of the two managing partners!

According to Wagner's spiel, a "Kawod" project of this association received a cool €60,000 from the district since 2020. This project focuses on stopping violence and teaching respect, with young whippersnappers playing cricket together.

But Dee, it's important to note, he claims he didn't have a finger in the funding pie. He didn't sneak in on the votes for approval at the district office, he says, as that's usually a no-no in these circumstances. However, he admitted his bias in the matter, having previously declared his association involvement.

So until a replacement rears its head, District Mayor Kirstin Bauch (Greens) will serve as a sort of temporary commissioner for the youth and health departments.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of Article 93 (2) of the Treaty, as the ongoing political drama in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin, centers around the eviction of Deputy District Mayor Detlef Wagner. This general news story involves policy-and-legislation and politics, as the SPD, Left, and FDP representatives in the district parliament questioned Wagner's alleged conflict of interest regarding funding allocation for a non-profit project.
