Fraudsters steal at least hundred thousand euros from elderly woman in Lower Saxony - Elderly woman loses €100,000 to fake police officer scam in Germany

An elderly woman in Lower Saxony lost at least €100,000 after falling victim to a fake police officer scam. The fraudsters tricked her into withdrawing cash and handing it over to a courier. Authorities were alerted to the crime on Monday. The scammers posed as criminal investigators and contacted the woman with a fabricated story. They claimed a document bearing her name had been found during an arrest. Believing the lie, she withdrew money from her bank on multiple occasions. The woman then handed the cash to a courier sent by the fraudsters. The incident was reported to police in Hildesheim, who are now investigating the case. This latest scam follows a similar pattern seen earlier in Herne, where three seniors in the Wanne district were targeted on January 2, 2026. In each case, the victims were deceived by callers pretending to be law enforcement. The woman’s losses total at least €100,000. Police have warned the public about such scams, where criminals impersonate officials to steal money. Investigations into the fraud are ongoing.
