Elderly dancers embody the essence of the New York Liberty team spirit, aged 40 and above
The Timeless Torches: A Dancing Sensation Over 40
The Timeless Torches, a unique dance squad exclusively composed of individuals over the age of 40, are set to perform before the New York Liberty's crucial Game 3 in the first round of the WNBA playoffs against the Phoenix Mercury.
Margaret Hamilton, a 56-year-old legal executive assistant and the captain of the Timeless Torches for the past 20 years, joined the group after years of limited dancing experience. Her repertoire was confined to dancing at clubs, in her house, and at various events before she became a part of the Timeless Torches.
Phyllis Spencer, a fitness instructor and co-captain of the squad, found her passion for dance after watching the Timeless Torches perform at a Liberty game. Spencer, who teaches kickboxing, gymnastics, and aerobics at the YMCA, considers dancing a "natural high."
Shirley Koehler, the oldest member of the Timeless Torches at 88 years old, took a hiatus from dancing after getting married but returned to the dance floor after auditioning for the Timeless Torches. Koehler continues to dance with the group because of the sense of family within the team.
Despite sometimes forgetting her routine, Koehler enjoys performing for the crowd. Spencer encourages her fellow dancers, especially on difficult days, to keep trying and emphasizes the importance of confidence and training.
The Timeless Torches' diverse range of body types and backgrounds helps them connect with a wide audience. Their eclectic styles and the unique personality of each member have made them popular, inspiring their fanbase. Some aspire to grow up and become a Timeless Torch, while others are amazed by their ability to dance at an older age.
This year, the Timeless Torches celebrated their 20th anniversary. If the Liberty win, it will generate joy in New York for basketball and dance fans alike. The team facing the Liberty in the WNBA championship series is the Las Vegas Aces.
The Timeless Torches practice weekly and reaudition for their spot on the squad each season. The squad's popularity can be attributed to their dedication and passion for dance, which shines brightly on the court or stage. Whether performing before the game or at halftime, the Timeless Torches are a spectacle not to be missed.
