"Elated triumph": Bayer secures victory over Frankfurt in Hjulmand's debut game
In a closely contested match, Bayer Leverkusen emerged victorious against Eintracht Frankfurt, securing their first win of the Bundesliga season with a 3:1 scoreline.
The match marked the debut of Leverkusen's new coach, Kasper Hjulmand, and his team showed resilience and purpose throughout the game. Despite significant changes in the squad, Leverkusen looked stable and resilient, with standout performances from players like Nathan Tella, who created multiple opportunities for his team.
The game began in Leverkusen's favour, with Alejandro Grimaldo scoring an early goal in the 10th minute, his free-kick deflecting off Michael Zetterer's body into the net. However, Frankfurt struggled to make an impact in the attack, with Ritsu Doan and central striker Jonathan Burkardt having a poor performance.
Leverkusen's lead was extended in the 45th minute plus four seconds, when Patrik Schick converted a penalty. Frankfurt, who had won their first three competitive games, were surprisingly toothless in attack for long periods and made uncharacteristic defensive errors.
In the second half, Frankfurt applied pressure but created few clear-cut chances. Can Uzun scored a consolation goal for Frankfurt in the 52nd minute, after a corner that Leverkusen failed to clear. However, Leverkusen defended well in the tense final phase, ultimately holding onto their narrow lead.
The game took a turn in the 59th minute, when Robert Andrich was sent off with a yellow-red card, leaving Leverkusen to play most of the second half with one less player. To add to Leverkusen's woes, Ezequiel Fernández received a yellow-red card in the second minute of extra time, leaving them with only nine players.
Despite the disadvantage, Leverkusen showed great determination and Grimaldo scored another goal for them in the final minutes of the game, leaving them with only nine players. Jarell Quansah and Patrik Schick also had opportunities to extend Leverkusen's lead but were unable to convert.
Frankfurt's sporting director Markus Krösche stated that they did exactly what Leverkusen wanted in the match. The new co-trainer at Eintracht Frankfurt, Stefan Buck, who acted during the match against Leverkusen, while the regular sporting director Markus Krösche was in the stands, also had a challenging game to manage.
In the end, Bayer Leverkusen's resilience and determination paid off, securing their first win of the Bundesliga season. The team will look to build on this victory as they continue their campaign in the league.
