El Mundo Ends Collaboration With Legendary Political Cartoonists Gallego & Rey

El Mundo has ended its collaboration with renowned political cartoonists Gallego & Rey after nearly three decades. The decision came earlier than planned due to shifting audience preferences and political polarization.

The duo, consisting of José María Gallego and Julio Rey, began their partnership in 1981 at Diario 16. They joined El Mundo in 1991, where they caricatured five governments and depicted major historical events through their cartoons. Over their career, they created over 30,000 cartoons and contributed to publications like El País, El Jueves, and Marca.

The root of the issue was the changing audience, who now favoured sports news over political satire. This, coupled with increasing political polarization and a growing distance between the newspaper and the duo, led to the early termination of their collaboration. Pedro J. Ramírez, the director of El Mundo, made the decision to end their partnership.

Gallego & Rey signed off with a poignant final cartoon depicting a spilled inkwell and fading footprints, symbolizing their departure. Despite the end of their stage at El Mundo, their impact on Spanish political cartooning remains significant, with a legacy of over 30,000 cartoons spanning nearly four decades.
