In a thrilling encounter at the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, Eintracht Frankfurt overcame an early deficit to secure a resounding 5-1 victory over Galatasaray Istanbul in their UEFA Champions League debut on September 14, 2022.

The match, played before 58,700 spectators, was under the guidance of Dino Toppmöller, the coach of Eintracht Frankfurt at the time. The team from Hesse started nervously, with Yunus Akgun scoring the first goal for Galatasaray in the 8th minute. However, Can Uzun quickly responded for Eintracht with a goal into the far corner to take the lead.

Frankfurt struggled to create chances and remained vulnerable in defense for a long time. But the tide turned in the 37th minute when Davinson Sanchez unluckily deflected a lob from Ritsu Doan past Cakir into his own net, putting Eintracht back on track in the Champions League standings.

Jonathan Burkardt, who was named player of the match, then took center stage. He headed a free-kick from Fares Chaibi into the net for his first goal in an Eintracht jersey. Burkardt scored another goal with a header, which Sanchez deflected, extending Eintracht's lead.

Knauff almost put Frankfurt ahead early on with a placed shot in the 2nd minute, and he delivered the final knockout blow with the fifth goal for the visitors with a quarter of an hour left.

Galatasaray's expected comeback failed to materialize after the break. Kevin Trapp, who recently joined Paris FC, was formally bid farewell by Eintracht Frankfurt fans before the match. Trapp, the long-time Eintracht captain, wished his former teammates good luck in the challenging tasks ahead in the Champions League.

The Bundesliga team showed its international maturity during the match, demonstrating resilience and composure to secure a convincing victory in their debut Champions League match.
