Hamburger SV's 2. Bundesliga Coaches: A Rollercoaster Ride
Struggling with a new manager every year and a half, the 2nd division team in Hamburg has faced a revolving door of coaching changes, stretching over a span of seven years. - Eight-year tenure at HSV, switching through eight different team managers, serving as a second-tier coach.
Hey there! Let's dive into the whirlwind of coaches who've led the Hamburg Sinninge since their seven years in the 2. Bundesliga. This Saturday (20.30 Uhr/Sky and Sport1), they're aiming to wash away the relegation woes and breathe new life back into the club against SSV Ulm. Over these seven seasons, an impressive eight coaches have tried their hand at propelling the HSV back into the Bundesliga.
Christian Titz (54 years/13. March 2018 to 23. October 2018/224 days in office)
Stepping in after parting ways with Bernd Hollerbach, Titz, who previously orchestrated the U21 to a Regionalliga summit, took the reins as head coach. Despite failing to prevent the first Bundesliga relegation after the 2017/18 season, he was kept on board with a contract until 2020. Following a scoreless draw against VfL Bochum, Titz was given the boot after the tenth matchday due to a perceived risk of not meeting the season's goals. Currently, he's coaching 1. FC Magdeburg, a team with promotion ambitions.
Hannes Wolf (44/23. October 2018 to 30. June 2019/250) and Dieter Hecking (60/1. July 2019 to 30. June 2020/365)
Wolf, a trainer prodigy who once led VfB Stuttgart to the Bundesliga, and Hecking, an experienced trainer who triumphed over VfL Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal in 2015, took charge following Titz's departure. Wolf led the HSV to the autumn championship with six wins in seven games, while Hecking managed to maintain the HSV in a relegation playoff spot, until it plummeted to fourth place after a 1:5 drubbing at the hands of SV Sandhausen in their own stadium on the final matchday. Both coaches have moved on to new clubs, with Wolf coaching the German U20 national team, and Hecking fighting with VfL Bochum to stave off relegation in the top tier.
Daniel Thioune (50/6. July 2020 to 3. May 2021/301)
Thioune, who had successfully steered VfL Osnabrück to the 2. Bundesliga, was brought on board following Hecking's departure. His tenure began with a defeat in the first round of the cup against third division team Dynamo Dresden. Thioune led the HSV to the autumn championship, but thanks to the perennial foe, SV Sandhausen, a 1:2 defeat on the 29th matchday sealed his fate. Thioune is now leading Fortuna Düsseldorf, with whom he has a shot at promotion.
Horst Hrubesch (74/4. May 2021 to 30. June 2021/57)
Dubbed the club's idol and a 1983 European Cup winner, Hrubesch took charge for the final three games of the 2020/21 season. Hrubesch, a formidable striker in his time, started with a bang, securing a 5-2 win over 1. FC Nürnberg, but the Red Shorts could only manage fourth place in their third season in the second division. Hrubesch has since returned to his role in the club's youth development.
Tim Walter (49/1 July 2021 to 12 February 2024, 956 games)
Walter, who previously coached Holstein Kiel and VfB Stuttgart, joined the Hamburg command bridge in 2021. Under Walter, the team went to the relegation playoff in 2021/22 and 2022/23, both times falling short, losing to Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart, respectively. With a contract until 30 June 2024, Walter attempted a third try, but it ultimately ended in his release in February last year. Since then, he's been unemployed.
Steffen Baumgart (53, 20 February 2024 to 24 November, 278 games)
Baumgart, an avid HSV fan, took charge from Walter in February. Despite his extensive coaching experience with teams like Union Berlin and Holstein Kiel, the team couldn't be turned around during his tenure. The 2023/24 season ended in fourth place, as it did under his predecessor. Union Berlin has welcomed Baumgart as their new head coach since 2 January.
Merlin Polzin (34, 12 to 19 February 2024 and since 25 November 2024, 172 days in office)
Entering the scene as a local boy with experience working as co- and youth coach at HSV and VfL Osnabrück, Polzin showed promise during his initial stint as an interim coach. Following Baumgart's release, he stepped in for a second time, and since 23 December 2024, he's officially been at the club's helm. Polzin led HSV from eighth place to the top of the table. Can he lead the team back to the Bundesliga this Saturday? Will it finally be the end of the HSV's exile in the 2. Bundesliga?
